Cancun - Mexico’s Brilliant Mirage
Cancun is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico’s eastern state of Quintana Roo. It is hard to imagine that less than forty years ago, Cancun was overrun with jungles and insects.
The Mexican government spent a great deal of money developing that area and growing the infrastructure, investing in Cancun, which was to become the jewel of tourism in eastern Mexico.
All beaches are public and regardless of where you stay, you can walk on any beach.
When heading toward the Hotel Zone downtown, you come upon a gorgeous beach called la Playa las Perlas, followed a few miles later by la Playas Tortuga (Turtle Beach). All these splendid beaches face the warm turquoise waters of the Caribbean.
Divers delight in Cancun’s beautiful waters. It boasts the largest reef in the world except for the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
The Great Maya Reef is just south of Cancun and incredibly varied marine life can be seen in the underground caves or “cenotes.” Cancun enjoys a tropical climate without the humidity and daily rain found elsewhere. You can expect 240 days of sunshine each year making it the perfect place to plan a vacation.
If nightlife is your pleasure, Cancun is filled with places to dance and drink the night away to live entertainment. The Bull Dog in the Krystal Hotel has been host to rock stars like the Rolling Stones and Shakira.
The Coco Bongo is a place where you can enjoy tropical disco, reggae and salsa dancing, as well as crazily dressed employees happy to pour tequila down your throat!
There is no shortage of fabulous restaurants in Cancun. International cuisine of all kinds is served and can be found at every price range. The Top 10 Restaurants in Cancun are: Blue Bayou, Cambalache, Casa Rolandi, Club Grill, El Pescador, La Dolce Vita, La Habichuela, La Parilla, Lorenzillo’s, Paloma Bonita.
Great buffets are served at the Quetzal in downtown Cancun. The moderately priced Perico’s and the very reasonable El Tacolote are some places to test the local Mexican cuisine.
Terraneo, a Mediterranean style restaurant has a wonderful romantic atmosphere as does La Dolce Vita, where Italian food is king. La Habichuela serves Caribbean food in surroundings just made for you and your honey. It might be worth noting that some of the most romantic places to eat in Cancun are also on the Top Ten Restaurant list!
